Healthy Homemade Dog Food

Organic and fun food isn't just for humans. Long before commercial dog food was created, dogs ate a similar diet to humans. The preservatives and chemicals in commercial dog foods can be harming your dog. Have you ever considered making dog food from scratch using whole vegetables and meat? We found some awesome options for you!

The central ingredient in dogs' diet is fresh meat, which can be purchased from a butcher or grocery store that has a fresh meat counter. The best meats are lamb, beef, chicken, and fish can also be added. Always speak with your veterinarian when making a big change in your dog's life regarding diet or lifestyle. Include a wide variety of foods to ensure your dog is getting the correct nutrients.

Feed your dog according to body weight and activity level. If your dog is really active, he may need more calories compared to an older dog. Our dogs eat a grain free diet, you can eliminate the rice in the below recipes or choose ones with just meat, veggies, and beans (like we do). Eggs are another great source of protein and fats.

Spinach and Salmon Scramble

For something different try a spinach and salmon scramble. Fish oil is great for dogs as an added supplement or you can feed your dog salmon directly, with no bones. All you need is:

  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • 1/2 cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
  • 1/2 can skinless, boneless salmon (3 ounces), drained
  • 2 eggs
  • Cook in a nonstick skillet and serve once cooled

Pet Plate

We're not saying completely ditch the commercial dog food. There are some brands that get as natural as possible and include necessary vitamins and nutrients that are right for your dog. Always do what is right for your dog's specific needs according to any allergies, digestive problems, skin issues, and body type.

Remember to never give your dog:

  • Chocolate
  • Onions and garlic
  • Avocados
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Raw bread dough
  • Alcohol

Have fun experimenting with new recipes and always consult your veterinarian of any allergic reactions or vomiting. Give your dog daily Flea Away in addition to a healthy and well-balanced (it tastes like a liver treat) to protect from fleas and insects.
